Now one of the last remaining Horse-Drawn Barges in the UK, a trip on the “Tivertonian” offers a truly unique and memorable experience of yesteryear for you and your family to enjoy !
This beautiful wide beam, 75 seater Horse-Drawn Barge operates to Timetable from 1st April to 31st October with daytime Public Trips and is also available for Private Hire during the Day and Evenings.
Our most loved and popular trip is a 2 ½ hr return, where the barge travels for 1 hour to East Manley, then turns around and moors up, allowing you the opportunity to take a short walk to see the aqueduct, (designed by Brunel's team of railway engineers), or talk to the horse as he rests for a while under the shade of a tree.
During your special journey, you hear memorable tales, anecdotes and historical facts about the Horse-Drawn Barge and the Grand Western Canal. There is often 2 minutes silence... where the peace and tranquility of travelling by Horse-Drawn Barge can be fully appreciated.
A Horse Drawn Barge Trip can also be purchased as a Voucher and given as a gift to a friend or someone you love. (gift vouchers can be for one or multiple persons)
You may also like to know we have a lovely Gift Shop to look around on the day.
The fantastic design of this Horse-Drawn Barge, means it matters Not what the weather decides on the day of your trip, . . Large sliding picture windows can be raised or lowered. Up, to keep warm, snug and dry or Down to create an open-air atmosphere on those fine summer days and evenings.
Tiverton Canal Co has 2 x dogs namely, Mollie & Roxy. Both border collies do sometimes come on our trips and ride on the horses back. Unfortunately we are unable to offer other dogs onto the barge on Public Trips due to a lack of space. (Assistance dogs by prior arrangement)
The Horse-Drawn Barge has Easy Access and is Carpeted Throughout with Upholstered Seating and Modern Flush Toilet.

>. Again I write to thank you all for giving me and my party such a wonderful journey along the canal last Friday. Everyone enjoyed every minute of it and are still talking about their memorable day out. It was great seeing you again Samantha and I loved the great welcome I received from you. You all deserve every success, for your work so hard to achieve it, but your efforts bring such pleasure and smiles from your passengers and that certainly spells success and the fact you are doing it right. Yvonne de Gruchy
>. A short note to thank all the staff and of course "TAFFY" for a lovely time spent on the horse-drawn "Tivertonian" barge on the evening trip Saturday, 8 September. this was a wonderful experience, made special by you all. Every good wish for the future. Mr & Mrs Musgrove, Mrs Wallace, P.J Wallace.
>. Great horse drawn barge trip for young and old, watch the beautiful scenery as you are gently pulled along by one of three horses, feed the ducks and swans from the barge as you drift along the canal. Beautiful on sunny days but still enjoyable if rather wet. Excellent commentary from the team as you enjoy the trip made even better by the fact they are in period costume which really adds to the time spent on board. Tip remember to take polos for your horse power !!!! Simon B
>. Big Big thankyou to all at Tiverton Canal for our very special trip!! Our Party/gang had a wonderful time and are still talking about what a great price it was. Sian loved singing on the Barge and we look forward to more trips :-) Thanks again

>. 48 of us had a fantastic trip on the Canal, The previous evening Phil, Jacqui and Sam joined us for dinner at the Tiverton Hotel (Highly recommended). Phil gave us a very interesting talk after dinner, with slides, stories and titbits. The talk was very beneficial and enhanced our enjoyment of the canal trip the next morning. The enthusiasim which this family feel for the Canal is very obvious, as is their desire to preserve the Business, and the Horse Drawn barge, for future generations. We would recommend this trip, with or without the after dinner talk, to other Holiday organisers. Hazel G (Group Organiser)

>. A very enjoyable day, especially the two minute silence as we drifted through the woods; the only noise was the water lapping against the side of the boat and the clip clip of the horse's hooves.

>. Hi, came to your lovely Canal Barge during Easter week with a coach load. What can I say, the weather was very kind and all the staff were just magic. It would be unfair to single out any particular one, so I won't, except for the biggest poser and the biggest member of staff, dear old "TAFFY".
I could go on all day, but suffice it to say I will return for sure. Many many thanks for a great afternoon out. Cheers, Dave Jack.
